Florida pitchers struck out a season-high 14 batters en route to a 5-2 victory Wednesday against Charleston Southern before 984 fans at McKethan Stadium. The victory improves Florida to 3-3 overall while Charleston Southern dropped to 2-2 on the season.
Florida starter Joey Simon (1-2) earned the victory after pitching 4.0 innings of perfect ball. He struck out five of his 14 batters faced and allowed only one hit. Reliever Keith Ramsey earned his first collegiate save as he pitched the final 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball. Ramsey struck out five batters and allowed only one hit in eight batters faced. Freshman Matt Bomeisl, in his first collegiate appearance struck out four batters in 2.0 innings of scoreless relief.
Charleston Southern reliever Matt Coenen (0-1) took the loss after allowing seven hits and three earned runs.
The Gators broke the game open by scoring two runs in both the fifth and seventh innings. Kevin Estrada led off the fifth inning with a double to right center and scored on Brian Rose’s RBI single. In the seventh, Rose led off the inning by reaching first on a hit-by-pitch, advanced around the bases on walks and scored on a Pat Osborn groundout to short.
Estrada led Florida with a 2-4 performance, his fourth multi-hit game of the season. Peter Nystrom contributed two hits and Aaron Davidson scored two runs on two bases on balls. Pat Osborn, David Klebonis and Brian Rose each contributed hits.
Florida is next in action at Florida State on Saturday and Sunday. Game times are 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday at Dick Howser Stadium. Saturday’s game will be televised live on Sunshine Network.
