Monday March 4, 2013No. 2 Florida Lacrosse Welcomes No. 12 Loyola to Dizney Stadium on Tuesday
Fresh off their seventh-straight win to open up the 2013 season, the No. 2 University of Florida lacrosse team returns home to host No. 12 Loyola on Tuesday at Donald R. Dizney Stadium. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
The Gators are coming off a 14-10 win over No. 4/5 Syracuse on Saturday at the Orange Bowl Classic in Miami. Florida rattled off three-straight goals to open the game and never looked back as it defeated the Orange for the first time since 2011. The Orange and Blue improved to 7-0 on the season with the win and continue on their best start in program history.
Florida is currently led by senior attack Ashley Bruns (Ellicot City, Md.) who has a team-high 21 points off 16 goals and five assists. Senior attack Kitty Cullen (Rockville, Md.) scored a game-high four goals against the Orange, has chipped in 20 points (17 goals, three assists) and sophomore attack Shannon Gilroy (Northport, N.Y.) also has 20 points so far this season (19 goals, one assist). Senior goalie Mikey Meagher (Liverpool, N.Y.) has logged 37 saves so far this season.
Tuesday’s matchup marks the first meeting between the two programs with Loyola coming in at 2-2, fresh off a thrilling win 11-10 win over No. 16 Towson. Sophomore attack Hannah Schmitt scored the game winning goal with 10 seconds on the clock to put the Greyhounds record at .500 for the season.
They are led by Schmitt with nine goals on the season, as redshirt sophomore midfielder Taryn Vanthof and junior Marlee Patton have chipped in 11 points each. Patton, an Australian National Team member, is the returning BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year. Freshman goalkeeper Molly Wolf has logged all the minutes in the cage for the Greyhounds this season, recording 31 saves and a .425 save percentage.
Loyola currently has wins over Towson and Penn State while suffering losses to Virginia and Johns Hopkins. At the helm of the Greyhounds is Jen Adams, one of the most decorated lacrosse players in history. Adams is in her fourth year with the Greyhounds and holds a 55-24 overall record.
