HEAD COACH TIM WALTON WEEKLY MEDIA AVAILABILITY

After an exciting 3-1 mid-week victory over Sunshine State rival USF Wednesday evening in Tampa to improve to 17-1 overall on the year, the No. 4 Florida softball team will return home to the friendly confines of Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium for just the second time this season as the Gators will play host to their second home tournament of the spring.

The Orange and Blue will host Drake, Mount St. Mary’s, FAMU and Presbyterian in Gainesville for the three-day tourney March 1-3. UF will take to the field for five games through the span of the weekend, kicking off the tournament Friday at 4 p.m. with Drake, followed by a 6:15 match-up with Mount St. Mary’s.

All Gator games will be live on the radio locally on WYGC-FM 105 (104.9) The Game, with audio streaming available on GatorZone.com. Live stats for all tournament games will be available on Gametracker. For links and all broadcast information for UF’s March tournament, visit the softball schedule page on GatorZone.com

Florida has faced just two of the tournament institutions in its 16-year history, FAMU and Drake. The Gators own a 1-0 record all-time against Drake and are a perfect 9-0 against in-state opponent FAMU. UF will face both Mount St. Mary’s and Presbyterian for the first time in program history.

FAMU and Drake will kick things off at 11 a.m. Monday at KSP in the opening game of the weekend. For a complete tourney schedule, visit GatorZone.com.

FLORIDA ENTERING THE HOME TOURNAMENT

A three-run sixth inning propelled the Gators to a thrilling 3-1 victory over USF in Wednesday night action in Tampa at the USF Softball Stadium, marking Florida’s seventh come-from-behind win of the season.

The Orange and Blue used a two-out rally in the top of the sixth, started by a freshman Kelsey Stewart (Wichita, Kan.) double and followed by a freshman Kirsti Merritt (Lake Panasoffkee, Fla.) game-tying RBI single. Next up, sophomore Lauren Haeger (Peoria, Ariz.) went yard with a two-run blast, her third of the season, to bring UF ahead, 3-1. Junior ace Hannah Rogers (Lake Wales, Fla.) improved to 8-1 in the circle for the Gators with five strikeouts. A Kenshyra Jackson solo home run in the fourth counted as USF’s lone run.

The Gators’ defense and Rogers shined Wednesday, forcing the Bulls to leave two runners on three times in the second, third and fifth innings before Stewart struck for a clutch unassisted double play in the bottom of the sixth to retire USF after the Bulls were threatening with two on and one out in the stanza.

Rogers then fanned the first two South Florida batters in the bottom of the seventh and popped up the third to clinch the victory for Florida.

Florida is batting .281 as a team, and owns an impressive .415 on-base percentage. The Gators are led by Stewart at the plate (.433 avg.), while Merritt owns a .828 slugging percentage and .564 on-base percentage for the Orange and Blue.

NEXT UP FOR THE GATORS

Next up, the Gators will take a spring break road trip to the Heart of Dixie March 5-10. Florida will take on No. 1/2 Alabama in a non-conference mid-week single game March 6 at 7 p.m. ET in Tuscaloosa at Rhoads Stadium before opening the Southeastern Conference slate at SEC Western Division opponent Auburn March 8-10. The Gators and Tigers will tilt at 7 p.m. (ET) Friday and 2 p.m. (ET) on both Saturday and Sunday at the Auburn Softball Complex.
