Sunday February 24, 2013Hedberg and Lendl Lead Gators Into Fifth Place After First Round of Sugar Bowl Invite

New Orleans, La.

Getting a sub-70 round from sophomore Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain) along with a two-under (70) from senior Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.), the third-ranked University of Florida women’s golf is in fifth place (-2, 286) after the first round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Invitational at the English Turn Golf Club in New Orleans. Florida is four shots behind overall leader and host school Tulane (-6, 282).

The three-under (69) for Hedberg is her first under 70 round since the second round of the Betsy Rawls Invitational in late October when she fired a 67, her second lowest 18 hole score of the year. Sunday’s 69 is also Hedberg’s team-leading 12th even or under par round and fifth lowest of the 2012-13 season.

Hedberg currently sits in a tie for fourth place, just one shot ahead of her teammate, Lendl, who is in a tie for seventh place after a two-under (70). The senior had the most consistent day out of Florida’s five player rotation, getting two straight birdies on the 13th and 14th hole and recorded par on every other hole.

“We got off to a slow start today, but rebounded nicely and hung in there down the stretch,” Florida head coach Emily Bastel said. “We did a lot of things right and will look for a few more putts to drop over the next few days. The weather is supposed to be poor the next few days, so we need to stay patient and be ready for anything.”

Hedberg’s round actually didn’t have the best start to it as she bogeyed the par four, 7th hole, which was her starting hole. She was able to get back to even par with a birdie on No. 14 and then three straight birdies on Nos. 1-3 vaulted her up the leaderboard to three-under and a position in the top five.

The three remaining Gators also had solid rounds on the New Orleans course as well. Junior transfer Elcin Ulu (Istanbul, Turkey) had a nice rebound day after a tough tournament two weeks ago in California. Ulu started off on the wrong side of par with bogeys on No. 8 and No. 9, but was able to settle down and birdie both par fives on the back nine. Even with a bogey at No. 13, Ulu was able to finish the day at one-over with a 73 and will go into Monday in a tie for 31st.

Senior Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) had the fourth-best round for the Gators on Sunday, carding a two-over (74), which is her third-lowest of the 2013 calendar year. Piccio currently sits in a tie for 41st, while sophomore transfer Anna Young (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada) rounded out the lineup with a three-over (75). The 75 for Young is her second-lowest of the year and good to put her in a tie for 54th out of the 89 player field.

Play will continue tomorrow with the second round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Invitational and live scoring will be available on All groups are set to tee off at 9 a.m.
