Gainesville, FL

The Gators Won the 2001 GRU Classic at home.

A perfect and relentless defense was the difference that gave Florida the GRU Softball Classic Championship trophy as the Gators defeated South Florida 2-1 Sunday afternoon at the Florida Softball Stadium.

The Gators (5-0) turned a school record-tying two double plays, both on USF's Turek sisters and behind the pitching of freshman Amanda Moore (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Hillcrest). UF also out-hit the Bulls (3-7) 6-3.

Moore sat the Bulls down in order for four straight innings, giving up just one hit in the first frame. But, the Bulls had her number in the fifth inning. USF third baseman Ginny Georgantis led off with a single and scored on a double from first baseman Courtney Lewellan to tie the game at one a piece. Moore hit the next batter on a bunt attempt, and Coach Karen Johns called in senior Renise Landry (West Monroe, La./West Monroe) in relief.

Landry forced a pop-up and struck out one. USF stranded runners at first and second when sophomore center fielder Amanda Judd (Cornville, Ariz./Mingus Union) made a diving catch while running backward toward the fence to get UF out of the inning. Landry sat down her next six batters, including one strike out for her second win of the year. It was the only inning in which UF allowed more than three USF hitters a chance.

"My defense helped me out, and Amanda's catch was the turning point in the game for us," Landry said.

Johns, too, felt the fielding gave UF the win. "We're pleased with the way we've been playing defense. Things like (Amanda's catch) are what will make the difference in close games like this."

Sophomore third baseman Jenn Mossadeghi (Jupiter, Fla./The King's Academy) started UF off with a single in the first. She advanced to third with a stolen base and a wild pitch. Judd hit the ball in the infield for a fielder's choice and scored Mossadeghi. The Gators hung on through four scoreless innings before capitalizing on three hits in the sixth for the winning run.

Southeastern Louisiana (2-3) defeated Stetson (0-9) earlier Sunday in the consolation game. UF will be the host of the University Centre Hotel Invitational Feb. 16-18 with Baylor, Belmont and Chattanooga. The Gators open vs. Belmont Friday at 5 p.m.
