Monday February 18, 2013Dohony, DuPre named ALC Players of the Week
Senior defender Emily Dohony (Parkton, Md.) and freshman midfielder Sydney DuPre (Houston, Texas) have been named the Defensive and Rookie ALC Players of the Week, announced by the conference on Monday.
The Gators pick up the honors on both defense and rookie of the week for the second-consecutive week, as DuPre was the rookie of the week for her performance against North Carolina while senior goalie Mikey Meagher (Liverpool, N.Y.) earned defensive player of the week honors in the previous week.
Dohony earns the honor for the first time in her career as she helped spearhead the Florida defense to hold opponents to just 11 combined goals in two games against Jacksonville and High Point. She faced the daunting task of guarding high-scoring veterans including Jacksonville’s scorers Taylor McCord and Ali Hoffman, who both were held scoreless in the Gators’ 15-4 win. She was then faced with reigning NLC Player of the Year Mackenzie Carroll of High Point on Sunday where she held the attacker to no goals and no assists in the Gators 13-7 win over the Panthers.
In two games, Dohony grabbed five ground balls and caused a turnover.
DuPre picked up her second consecutive ALC Rookie of the Week honor as she also played outstanding on defense. The rookie held High Point’s Katie McLaughlin scoreless in a 13-7 win over High Point. In addition, she held Jacksonville’s Morgan Derner, a top scorer for the Dolphins, without a point on the evening. She also had three ground balls and caused a turnover in two games.
The duo has helped the Gator defense to hold their opponents to seven goals or less in each of their three games and have allowed just five goals after halftime this season. The No. 3 Florida Lacrosse team hosts its home opener on Wednesday versus Stony Brook with a 3:30 p.m. opening draw.
