Wednesday February 13, 2013Gators earn fifth-straight top five finish; Fifth place at Northrop Grumman Regional

Palos Verdes, Calif.

Looking to make up some ground in the final 18 holes of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, the University of Florida women’s golf team only trailed by 14 shots going into Wednesday’s final round, but could not get enough rolls to go its way as it finished the day in the same position it started, fifth place.

The Gators finished the 54-hole tournament at 40-over (892) to sit alone in fifth out of the 16 teams in the field, while UCLA took home the top team honors with a 18-over (870) score, a nine stroke win over second place finisher Southern Cal, 27-over (879).

The fifth place finish is the fifth straight top-ten finish for the Gators this year with their lowest finish of ninth place coming at the Tar Heel Invitational back in October. With the exception of the Tar Heel Invite, UF has finished in the top five in every other tournament, winning three of the four.

“We didn’t play our best today,” Florida head coach Emily Bastel said. “This golf course can be unforgiving. We had stretches of great golf, but lacked consistency. We will take a lot of positives from this tournament and have some specific things that we can improve on before we go to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl Tournament.”

Individually, sophomore Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain) finished in eighth place as the top Gator with rounds of 71-72-76-219 (+6). For Hedberg, it’s her fifth top-ten finish out of the six tournaments she’s been entered in and continues her strong sophomore campaign.

As for the rest of the Gator lineup, it was another tough day on the scorecard as the lowest third round total came from sophomore Anna Young (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada), who fired a 74 to finish tied for 25th with a tournament total of 74-77-74-225 (+12). It’s Young’s second-straight top-25 finish after she finished tied for 25th also at last month’s Florida Challenge.

The most consistent week from any Gator came from senior Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.), carding a 75 for the second straight day to finish tied for 22nd. Lendl ended the week with a total of 74-75-75-224 (+11), but it is her first finish outside of the top ten this season.

Senior Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines), coming off that confidence booster at the Lady Bulldog Individual Championship, stayed in the top 25 all week, but was only able to score a 76 in the final round, just two strokes better from her day two total. She finished tied for 25th along with Young with scores of 71-78-76-225 (+12). Piccio still has finished in the top 25 in all six tournaments this year.

Finally, junior Elcin Ulu (Istanbul, Turkey) had her best round of the week with a final round 75 to climb slightly in the standings to a tie for 65th place. Ulu completed the tournament with a three-round total of 79-83-75-237 (+24).

The women’s golf team will get a slight break before it’s back on the course competing in the All-State Sugar Bowl Championship in New Orleans, La. That tournament is schedule to be played Feb. 24-26 and will take place at English Turn Golf Club in New Orleans.
