Wednesday February 13, 2013No. 3 Florida Lacrosse Tops Jacksonville 15-4

Jacksonville, Fla.

Senior attack Gabi Wiegand (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored five goals as she helped lead No. 3 Florida to a 15-4 win over Jacksonville on Wednesday night at Southern Oaks Stadium.

Eight different Gators scored on the evening and held the Dolphins (1-2) to just one goal in the second half en route to their second victory of the season. Senior attack Kitty Cullen (Rockville, Md.), senior midfielder Brittany Dashiell (Bel Air, Md.) and sophomore midfielder Shannon Gilroy (Northport, N.Y.) each added two goals in the win. Six different Gators also added assists in the contest.

“I thought they did a fantastic job, I thought Gabi (Wiegand) did a great job driving to the goal and Brittany (Dashiell) drawing too and being able to distribute the ball. We got a lot of opportunities, a lot of shots and that’s what we were looking for tonight,” Head coach Amanda O’Leary said.

Florida (2-0) controlled the tempo on both sides of the field, leading the game in shots (31-13), ground balls (19-8), draw controls (13-8) and forced 10 turnovers in the contest.

Gilroy, Barry and senior defender Kayla Stolins (Glen Arm, Md.) led with three draw controls each while Dashiell added two. Senior attack Caroline Chesterman (South Nyack, N.Y.) led with four ground balls while Wiegand, senior defender Emily Dohony and freshman midfielder Sydney DuPre picked up two each.

Jacksonville controlled the opening draw and used nearly three minutes of the clock as they scored first. Cullen answered by scoring back-to-back goals to regain the lead with just under eight minutes in the game.  Dashiell added another goal in the next minute to bump the Gators lead 3-1.

Wiegand made it a 4-1 game on a free position shot as the Dolphin’s Amanda Hurley answered with a goal. That’s when the Florida defense kicked in, holding Jacksonville scoreless for the next 12 minutes. O’Leary credit defensive play by ALC Players of the Week senior goalie Mikey Meagher (Liverpool, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Sydney DuPre (Houston, Texas) among others on stopping Jacksonville’s offensive attack.

“I thought Emily Dohony did a great job tonight” O’Leary said “They (Jacksonville) like to drive the crease and I thought Jamie (Reeg) and Emily did a great job of denying that, Sam did a great job on the wing and Sydney had another fantastic night.”

Meagher had six saves on the night, including four in the second half on a total of 13 shots by the Dolphins.

“Ultimately, I feel that whole defensive unit did a fantastic job,” O’Leary said.

Freshman attack Lauren Lea (Elkridge, Md.) scored the first goal of her Gator career off an assist by Dashiell with 10:04 left to play in the first half. Senior attack Ashley Bruns (Ellicot City, Md.) chipped in a goal off an assist by Chesterman while sophomore midfielder Nora Barry (Marcellus, N.Y.) found the goal for the first time this season while Wiegand helped make the score 8-2 headed into the final two minutes before the half.

Jacksonville’s Hurley scored her second goal of the game with but Wiegand found the back of the net again with :14 seconds remaining helping the Gators to a 9-3 halftime lead. The Gators defense held JU to only five shots in the first half and forced seven turnovers before the break.

It was all Florida in the second half as JU could only muster one goal after the break on a Hurley goal seven minutes into the half.
