Tuesday February 12, 2013Meagher, DuPre named ALC Players of the Week
Senior goalie Mikey Meagher (Liverpool, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Sydney DuPre (Houston, Texas) grab the first American Lacrosse Conference Defender and Rookie of the Week honors, announced by the league on Tuesday.
Meagher backstopped the Gators to a crucial road win in Chapel Hill as Florida defeated UNC 5-3, shutting out the Tar Heels over the last 52 minutes of the contest. The senior netminder made nine saves and allowed only three goals in the game as Florida opened the 2013 campaign with a win.
DuPre made her debut a memorable one, helping her Gators defeat UNC by being a part of the defensive unit that did not allow a goal in the second half of the game. After the Tar Heels took a quick 3-0 lead eight minutes into the game, DuPre and the rest of her Florida squad did not allow UNC to score, giving the Gators a top-five win to open the season.
This is the second weekly honor for Meagher this week, as she was named the WomensLax.com Player of the Week on Monday. Northwestern’s Alyssa Leonard was the Offensive Player of the Week.
Gators are back in action tomorrow as they travel to Jacksonville with opening
draw set for 7 p.m.
