Gainesville, FL

Coach Karen Johns goes 2-0 in her career debut.

The University of Florida softball team opened its 2001 campaign with wins against Southeastern Louisiana and South Florida in its GRU Classic Friday at the Florida Softball Stadium.

The Gators (2-0) delivered an 8-0 shutout to SELU (1-1) in six innings in the season opener and came from behind to upend instate-rival USF (1-6) 4-3 in the nightcap. UF plays Stetson (0-6) Saturday at noon. If the Gators win, they will receive the top seed for the semifinals of the tournament.

Sophomore third baseman Jenn Mossadeghi (Jupiter, Fla./The King's Academy) set a personal-best hits mark, going 3-for-4 with a run and tying her own RBI record with three against SELU. Her classmate Nikki Michael (Pheonix, Ariz./Greenway) picked up the win in the circle. Michael went the distance and tossed a no-hitter through four and one-third innings. She gave up just two hits and two walks, and fanned five batters. The team run-ruled the Lions on 11 hits; eight of 10 different batters recorded a hit.

In the second game, USF scored twice in its first inning on three hits and an error. The Bulls held that lead through the top of the fourth. The Gators scored once on a sacrifice fly to right field from freshman second baseman Mylin Prieto (Cooper City, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas). USF came back with another run in its fifth frame. In the sixth, UF took advantage of two errors and juiced bases to take the lead when Mossadeghi drew a walk off of USF's Jamie Peterka.

First-year Coach Karen Johns, who is 2-0 in her career, was pleased with the way her team hung on and battled. "We gave up some defense. You can't do that against this team…They're a tough team. We were resilient, and our freshman came through. They executed like we did in practice. We were happy with that."

Johns was referring to pitcher Amanda Moore (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Hillcrest). Moore came in for senior starter Renise Landry (West Monroe, La./West Monroe) after four and one-third innings and allowed just two hits and struck out five in two over two-thirds. Landry accounted for three runs (one earned) on five hits, two walks and struck out three.

USF and SELU will play Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Teams will be seeded for the semifinal rounds; No. 1 vs. No. 4 at 5 p.m. and No. 2 vs. No. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
