Thursday January 31, 2013Gators Host Tennessee on Senior Night

Gainesville, Fla.

The No. 5 ranked men’s swimming and diving team and the No. 7 ranked women’s team will return to Gainesville as they host the Tennessee Volunteers on Friday, February 1 at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. It will be the Gators’ final dual meet of the season and serve as Senior Night. Diving will being at 5:30 p.m., followed by the senior ceremony at 6:30 p.m. and dual meet competition will kick off at 7 p.m.

This will be the 40th meeting for the men’s teams and the 27th for the women. Florida’s women hold a 25-1 record with the Volunteers, their only loss coming last season at Tennessee. The UT men hold a slight lead in the series as they are 20-19 against the Gators.

The last meeting between the two teams was last season at Tennessee. The men defeated the Volunteers 162-138, while the women fell 120-178. UF’s men have not suffered a defeat to the Volunteers since losing at Tennessee on February 2, 2008, when they fell 120-160 to the SEC foe. They have not lost a home meet since the 2000-01 season. Florida’s women will look to avenge their only loss to the Lady Vols’ when they were upset last season.

The No. 5 men are coming off of a SEC road win against the Auburn Tigers. The Gators have a strong group, led by juniors Marcin Cieslak (Warsaw, Poland) and Sebastien Rousseau (Cape Town, South Africa) who currently hold five top SEC times between the two of them. Fellow junior Brad deBorde is second in the SEC in both the 50 and 100 free events, while freshman Arthur Frayler (Fort Washinton, Pa.) and Pawel Werner (Wroclaw, Poland) have top two times as well.

Tennessee is coming off of a win on their own Senior Day, as both teams defeated the Georgia Bulldogs. The UT men (4-3, 2-0 SEC) raced a strong meet against the Bulldogs, as three swimmers Samuel Rairden, Sean Lehane and Brent Sterling each won two events for the Vols.

Florida’s women come in at No. 7 in the latest CSCAA ranking. They swam a close meet with Auburn, led by junior Elizabeth Beisel (North Kingstown, R.I.) as she won three events. Beisel currently holds top SEC times in three events. Freshman Jessica Thielmann (Newcastle, England) won both distance free events against the Tigers and currently has the third fastest 1000 free time in the conference.

The Lady Vols’ moved up to No. 4 in the rankings after their win over then No. 2 Georgia. Junior Lindsay Gendron is the reigning SEC Female Swimmer of the Week after her two wins on the day and freshman Faith Johnson was SEC Female Freshman of the Week.

The nine Gator seniors will be honored before the meet, including five men and four women. The men are Rodion Davelaar (Willemstad, Netherlands), Jackson Leonard, Cameron Martin (Clearwater, Fla.), Sean Saley (Pompano Beach, Fla.) and Jason Taylor (Plant City, Fla.). UF’s senior women are Jamie Bohunicky (Gainesville, Fla.), Sarra Lajnef (Tunis, Tunisia), Sharla Milne (Lithia, Fla.) and Corinne Showalter (Sarasota, Fla.)

Admission is free to the event. Spectators for the meet against Tennessee are encouraged to park in the North Lot adjacent to the O’Connell Center, and enter through Gate 2. The first 200 fans to arrive will receive a Florida swimming and diving beach towel.
