Monday January 28, 2013Wilbekin Named SEC Player of the Week
University of Florida junior guard Scottie Wilbekin (Gainesville, Fla.) was named the SEC Player of the Week, the conference announced today. This marks the first time a Florida player has earned this honor since Kenny Boynton garnered player of the week accolades on December 19, 2011.
Wilbekin averaged 15.0 points per game and 6.0 assists per contest in UF’s two games last week. At Georgia, he led the team in scoring with 17 points, matching a career-best. The Gainesville native was 7-for-9 from the field against the Bulldogs. Against Mississippi State, Wilbekin notched his third-straight game scoring in double-figures, finishing with 13 points. He was also one assist shy of his second career double-double. This marked the second-consecutive week that Wilbekin had recorded at least nine assists in a game.
The junior guard currently ranks second in the conference in assists per game (5.1) and assist to turnover ratio (2.6). He also is 10th in the SEC in steals (1.8 steals per game). Earlier this season, he and Boynton were both named to the watch list of candidates for the 2013 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year.
Florida is back in action on Wednesday, January 30 at the O’Connell Center when they host South Carolina at 8 p.m. Tickets to the game are still available. Fans can click here to view ticket options and purchase available tickets.
