Monday January 28, 2013No. 14 Florida Softball Predicted to Finish Fourth in SEC Eastern Division in 2013 Coaches' Poll
No. 14 Florida softball was predicted to finish fourth in the SEC Eastern Division by vote of the league’s head coaches, announced by the conference office Monday.
Tennessee, SEC newcomer Missouri and Georgia were predicted to finish first through third in the Eastern Division, while Florida, Kentucky and South Carolina rounded out the fourth, fifth and sixth-place predictions.
Alabama received eight coaches’ votes as the projected 2013 Conference Champion, while Tennessee received five.
The Gators finished third in the league last season after a decisive three-game series at Alabama in the last league set of the season for either squad, which allowed the final conference standings to shake out. The Orange and Blue then went on to play in the SEC Tournament Championship Game against the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa, marking UF’s fifth appearance in the tourney championship game.
Florida owns five SEC Eastern Division Titles (1998, 2008, 2009, 2010 & 2011) and three overall Conference Championships (1998, 2008, 2009).
Alabama, the defending national champion, took top preseason honors in the SEC Western Division, while LSU, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Auburn and Ole Miss followed second through seventh, respectively.
Points for the poll were awarded on a 1-2-3-4-5-6 basis for the Eastern Division and a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 basis for the Western Division. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.
The league will begin softball action on February 7 while conference play starts March 8. The 2013 SEC Softball Tournament will be held May 8-11 in Lexington, Ky. at the UK Softball Complex.
UF will kick off the 2013 campaign in Tempe, Ariz., at the Kajikawa Classic Feb. 8-10, hosted by Arizona State University. The Gators will square off with three preseason top-15 opponents at the season-opening tournament, including dates with No. 3 Cal, No. 5 Oregon and No. 13 Arizona. Florida opens the campaign in Tempe against Creighton Feb. 8 at 5 p.m. (ET). Be sure to check out Florida’s complete 2013 schedule on GatorZone.com.
