Thursday January 24, 201310 Gators Named Academic All-SEC

Gainesville, Fla.

10 University of Florida volleyball players have been named to the Southeastern Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll for their strong performances in the classroom, the league offices in Birmingham, Ala., announced Thursday.

The volleyball team was part of 46 SEC Academic Honor Roll selections for the University of Florida during Fall 2012. The 10 volleyball athletes honored ties the program best, also reached in 2006, 2009 and 2011. Freshmen are only eligible for the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll, so 10 out of 11 (90.0%) eligible volleyball student-athletes were honored for their academic performance this season.

Florida, who captured the SEC title with a 19-1 conference record and finished the 2012 season with a 27-5 overall record, has been ranked in the AVCA poll for 336 consecutive polls dating back to Sept. 17, 1991. That marks the nation’s fifth-longest streak of consecutive weeks ranked.

The Gators lead the nation since 1991 with 686 total victories and Florida’s 22 consecutive 25-win seasons also comprise a nation-leading streak. The Orange and Blue reached its 21st regional semifinal in program history in 2012 and finished the season ranked No. 10 in the final AVCA poll.

Of the 10 athletes honored include all three of Florida’s CoSIDA Academic All-District honorees: AVCA First Team All-American and SEC Player of the Year Chloe Mann (Gainesville, Fla.), First Team All-SEC and AVCA All-America Honorable Mention selection Tangerine Wiggs (Seattle, Wash.), and Second Team All-SEC and SEC Community Service Team honoree Betsy Smith (Atlanta, Ga.).

Mann finished her junior campaign leading the nation in hitting percentage (.444) while juggling a combined bachelor’s-master’s program in Business Administration & Information Sciences & Operations Management.

Smith, a Business Administration & Political Science major and Mass Communication minor, and Wiggs, an English major and Education minor, both graduated in December. Fellow senior Sundai Weston (Naples, Fla.) is on track to graduate in May with a bachelor’s in Public Relations and the senior trio maintained an average cumulative GPA of 3.75.

The 2012 Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2012 Spring, Summer and Fall terms.

Any student-athlete who participates in a Southeastern Conference championship sport or a student-athlete who participates in a sport listed on his/her institution’s NCAA Sports Sponsorship Form is eligible for nomination to the Academic Honor Roll. The following criteria should be followed: (1) A student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 or above for either the preceding academic year (two semesters or three quarters) or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution. (2) If a student-athlete attends summer school, his/her grade point average during the summer academic term must be included in the calculation used to determine eligibility for the Academic Honor Roll. (3) Student-athletes eligible for the Honor Roll include those receiving an athletics scholarship, recipients of an athletics award (i.e., letterwinner), and non-scholarship student-athletes who have been on a varsity team for two seasons. (4) Prior to being nominated, a student-athlete must have successfully completed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of non-remedial academic credit toward a baccalaureate degree at the nominating institution. (5) The student-athlete must have been a member of a varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.
