Tuesday January 22, 2013Rousseau and Russell Garner SEC Weekly Honors
The Gators earned two more conference honors as redshirt junior Sebastien Rousseau (Cape Town, South Africa) and freshman Sinead Russell (Burlington, Ontario) were named swimmers of the week the Southeastern Conference announced Tuesday.
Rousseau was SEC Male Swimmer of the Week and Russell was SEC Female Freshman of the Week after their performances over the weekend. This is the third honor this season for Rousseau and the first of her career for Russell.
The award comes after a split weekend for the Gators. Rousseau traveled with eight other Gators to Dallas, Texas for the SMU Classic on January 18-19. There he won all three individual events he competed in and added a second place finish as part of the 8000 free relay and fourth place finish in the 200 free relay.
He swam his second NCAA A time in the 400 IM this season (3:42.91) and dropped 13 seconds from his previous personal-best 500 free time after clocking in at 4:17.53. His time in the 500 free ranks third in the SEC this season. Rousseau also recorded a NCAA B time in the 200 fly (1:43.45) and led off the 800 free relay with a B cut mark of 1:37.21.
The womens team remained in Gainesville to play host to FAU. Russell took first in three events as the Florida women defeated the Owls in non-conference action. She won the 50 free in 23.71, raced to a first-place finish in the 100 free (50.66) and helped the 200 medley relay team finish first in 1:40.71. Both individual marks were personal best times for Russell and the three wins were the most for a Gator on the day.
