Tuesday January 22, 2013No. 12 Men's Tennis Hosts UCF Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The Florida men’s tennis team will host UCF on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex. The Gators opened the season with a 5-2 win over Miami on Saturday.
Florida’s first season under new head coach Bryan Shelton had a successful start on Saturday, as the Gators played a solid all-around match in defeating the Hurricanes. The doubles got off to good start, with the top two positions winning easily and the third leading 7-3 when play was halted.
In singles, junior Florent Diep made his debut at the No. 1 position and continued his good form from the fall season with a victory over UM’s Diego Soto. Junior Stephane Piro won in his first dual match with the Gators at No. 2 singles, and junior Mike Alford and freshman Gordon Watson won at three and four singles, respectively.
UCF traveled to Tallahassee last weekend and played two matches. The Knights lost to Florida State, 7-0, Saturday morning before bouncing back to beat Florida A&M, 4-2, later that afternoon. UCF won four singles matches after losing the doubles point to FAMU.
With a rare mid-week contest, the Gators will have a short turnaround before hosting the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday and Sunday with South Alabama, St. Johns and UNC-Wilmington coming to town.
“We’re going to be doing the same things in practice and just try to improve [with the quick turnaround],” said junior Mike Alford after Saturday’s match against Miami. “UCF has a good team and we’re not going to overlook them because it’s a Wednesday match. We know we’re going to have to be ready to go.”
