Wednesday January 16, 2013Quick Thoughts From Keenan Kish Entering 2013 Season
As the countdown continues toward the season opener for Gator Baseball against Duke at McKethan Stadium on Feb. 15, junior right-hander Keenan Kish (Worcester, Pa.) answered a few questions about the upcoming season.
What would you consider to be the team goals for the upcoming season?
“Working toward the SEC Championship, getting into the postseason and making another trip to Omaha. Even though there are a lot of new faces on our team, the goal of winning rings will stay the same.”
What goals have you set for yourself?
“I hope to contribute any way the coaches need me to – be it in a starting or relief role.”
What’s your favorite memory of last year?
“Being able to pitch at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha against South Carolina in the College World Series was special since that’s the highest platform in college baseball. However, being able to get the last two outs of the Super Regional against NC State to punch the ticket to Omaha in front of our home fans is a memory that I will never forget. I have to give credit to the group of older guys last year who have moved on that were able to make three-straight trips to the College World Series.”
How has the competition for playing time been as the season opener approaches?
“It’s been a very competitive environment. A by-product of that is that everyone is working hard and is putting their best foot forward for the upcoming season. It’s brought the group closer together because everyone knows what’s at stake and is pushing each other to succeed, which creates camaraderie and team bonding. It’s helping us jell as a group.”
How would you describe the team’s attitude during the off-season workouts?
“It’s been challenging and a good test to build character and push ourselves each day in the weight room to get us ready for the season. Coach Paul (Chandler) has spent a lot of time preparing us for the long grind of the season through intense workouts that challenge our mental and physical abilities.”
What’s your favorite part of the atmosphere at McKethan Stadium?
“Knowing that we have the support of The Gator Nation behind us every time that we take the field.”
Which home series are you looking forward to the most?
“Opening weekend against Duke. Being able to apply everything that we have worked on throughout the fall against another opponent will be a great way to start to the season. The first series also introduces all of the new guys to what it’s like to play on the weekends, especially once SEC play starts.”
What makes SEC games so special?
“Knowing that every weekend you’re going up against elite competition brings out the best in everyone. Playing in the best stadiums in front of great crowds is an exhilarating experience and is something to look forward to every weekend.”
