Sophia Witherspoon is Florida's 2013 SEC Legend

The Southeastern Conference 2013 Class of Women’s Legends showcases former student-athletes from all 14 SEC member institutions.


Florida is proud to have Sophia Witherspoon represented as its member of the 2013 Legend Class and will honor her in Gainesville at halftime of Sunday’s game against Tennessee that begins at 11:30 a.m. ET.


The class also will be honored at the 2013 SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament, March 6-10 in Duluth, Ga.  Each legend will be honored during half-time of their teams first game of the tournament, all 14 individuals will also be honored as a group during the half-time of the first semifinal games on March 9. The Greats will then participate in an autograph session on the concourse between the two games.  Complimentary posters of the Greats will be available at the session.


Witherspoon, who was a 5-foot-11 guard from Fort Pierce, Fla., was a three-year Gator letterwinner from 1998-91. She finished Gator Basketball career as the sixth all-time leading scorer with 1,381 points in just three seasons. Upon graduation she listed the top five of several career statistical categories: point average (5th), three-pointers made (5th), three-pointers attempted (5th), three-point field goal percentage (1st), made free throws (2nd), free throws attempted (2nd) and steals (5th).


Witherspoon was a First Team All-SEC selection following her senior year and a Second Team honoree her junior season. UF’s Office of Student Life created an academic award in her honor following her graduation: Sophia Witherspoon Award for Overall Excellence - with is presented each semester to two individuals who exemplify the positive attitude and strong work ethic in the classroom that they display on the playing field. It is one of the most prestigious awards presented by the Office of Student Life at the University of Florida.


Selected in the second round of the 1997 WNBA Draft by the NY Liberty, which made her the 11th overall player taken, Witherspoon enjoyed a nine-year professional career with the league.


She was iinducted into the UF Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
