Friday January 11, 2013Gators Wrap Up Successful Day One at Three Oaks Shootout

Fort Myers, Fla.

The Florida men’s tennis team had a successful first day at the Three Oaks Shootout in Fort Myers, Fla., at the Barbara Manzo Tennis Center at Three Oaks Park. The Gators won all three of their doubles matches and six of seven singles matches on the day.

"We had a good start to the season today and saw some areas where we can improve,” said head coach Bryan Shelton. “We were happy to see Steph out there competing for the Gators after sitting out for a year. The goal is to get better every single day. We are still working on identifying each player’s identity on the court and developing an awareness of how to play high percentage, aggressive tennis. We've got work to do, but I love this process.”

Florida had three doubles tandems on the courts, with all three picking up wins. Michael Alford and Florent Diep paired up to beat Bruno Abdelnour and Stephen Hoh of Illinois, 8-6, while Billy Federhofer and Gordon Watson also played an Illinois duo, taking down Tim Kopinski and Ross Guignon, 8-7. Bob van Overbeek and Stephane Piro beat Illinois’ Farris Gosea and Alex Jesse, 8-5.

In singles action, the Gators continued to play well with six out of seven players earning victories. Diep beat N.C. State’s Austin Powell, 7-5, 6-4, and van Overbeek defeated the Wolfpack’s Dave Thomson, 6-3, 6-4. Federhofer and Watson each won in three sets, as Federhofer beat Thomas Weigel, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, and Watson took down Simon Norenius, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Piro, playing in his first tournament after sitting out a redshirt year, beat N.C. State’s Trey Carter in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. Luke Johnson, a freshman from England, beat Rafael Paez, 6-2, 7-6. The lone loss for the Gators came when the Wolfpack’s Sean Weber defeated Alford in a tight 7-6, 7-6 decision.

The round-robin tournament will continue on Saturday, with more doubles play beginning at 10 a.m., followed by singles action. Results will be posted when available at the end of the day.
