Saturday January 5, 2013Florida Hosts LSU on Sunday in SEC Home Opener

Gainesville, Fla.

The Gators aim for their first Southeastern Conference win of the season when they play host to LSU on Sunday in the team’s first home league game of the year. Tip-off from the O’Connell Center is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET and will be televised live on the SEC Women’s Basketball Network (LISTING of the 49 different stations in 16 states to air the game live).

Both teams are coming off of close SEC-opening contests, as Florida dropped a 76-69 decision at sixth-ranked and preseason SEC favorite Kentucky while LSU earned an 84-79 victory over Ole Miss in Baton Rouge.

The Gators (11-4, 0-1 SEC) enter Sunday’s game against LSU riding a 14-game home winning streak, tied for the fourth-longest in UF history.

The Gators and Tigers (10-4, 1-0 SEC) met twice during the regular season last year and Florida captured both by a combined 13 points. Florida first earned the 62-58 win in Gainesville on Jan. 15, 2012, and snapped a five-game skid against LSU. The Gators then posted a 73-64 victory on Feb. 2, 2012, in Baton Rouge, where Florida tallied its first win since Jan. 21, 1996.

LSU holds a 24-11 lead the 35-game series, including an 11-6 record in games played in Gainesville. Since the mid-1990s when the Gators won seven consecutive games against the Tigers, LSU has captured 14 of the last 18 meetings against Florida.

Preseason Naismith Player of the Year candidate Jennifer George has scored in double-figures in 12 of the 14 games she has played this year (did not play in the season opener). George, who is the SEC’s ACTIVE career leader in double-doubles with 25, most recently tallied a 14-point, 11-rebound effort at sixth-ranked Kentucky (Jan. 3). George also is the SEC’s ACTIVE career leader in rebounds (780) and is second for blocks (152) and fifth for steals (140).

George leads the Gators in scoring (14.6), rebounding (9.2) and steals (2.5) and ranks second for field goal percentage (54.5%) and blocked shots (17).

Freshman Sydney Moss also is averaging a double-figure scoring effort, tallying 10.8 points per game. Despite what was her toughest collegiate game of the season in UF’s most recent outing (at Kentucky, Jan. 3) when she shot 0-10 from the field and did not score for the first time in her career, Moss leads Florida in assists (3.9 apg), while ranking second for scoring (10.8), rebounding (6.1 rpg) and steals (1.9) and has flirted with a triple-double four times. Among SEC freshmen entering the games of Jan. 6, Moss ranks second for assists and fourth for rebounds.

Jaterra Bonds, the only returning player that boasted experience in the backcourt for the Gators this year, ranks second on the team in trips to the free throw line (62), where she converts 80.6 percent of her attempts. Entering the Jan. 6 game against LSU, Bonds has made 50 free throws - just four shy of the 54 she converted through 33 games last year. Bonds tied a program record by hitting 100 percent (11-of-11) from the charity stripe while scoring a season and game-high 21 points at sixth-ranked Kentucky (Jan. 3).

Bonds is averaging 10.7 points with 3.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.

Over the last four games, freshman January Miller is averaging 11.8 points per game, hitting 59.3 percent (16-27) from the floor, including 58.3 percent (7-12) from three-point arc and 88.9 percent (8-9) from the free throw line.
