Tuesday December 4, 2012Gators Beisel and Rousseau Take Home SEC Weekly Honors
Florida juniors Elizabeth Beisel (North Kingstown, R.I.) and Sebastien Rousseau (Cape Town, South Africa) were each named the Southeastern Conference Swimmer of the Week, announced Tuesday by the conference.
Beisel was Co-SEC Female Swimmer of the Week, along with Georgia’s Melanie Margalis and Rousseau was Co-SEC Male Swimmer of the Week with Marcelo Chierighini of Auburn. This is the second honor for both swimmers this year, and the fourth week a Gator has been selected during the fall season. It is Beisel’s seventh time being named SEC Swimmer of the Week during her career and the second for Rousseau.
The award comes after the team’s performance at the Ohio State Invitational. UF’s women were solid throughout the meet, taking first out of nine ranked opponents with 837 points. Beisel swam her best times of the fall season, including five NCAA A cut times (three individual, two relay).
She swam the nation’s fastest time in the 400 IM (4:00.61) and ranks second and third in the nation, respectively, in the 200 back (1:52.00) and 500 free (4:34.54). Beisel owns the SEC top times in the 200 back and 400 IM and set two meet records in those events. She scored 163 of Florida’s 837 points in its first place finish.
The men finished second at the Ohio State Invitational winning eight events during the three-day meet. Rousseau had three NCAA A times, notched two individual victories in the 200 IM and 400 IM, and added a win with the pool record setting 800 free relay during action at the Ohio State Invitational.
His times in the 200 IM (1:44.02) and 400 IM (3:41.69) were personal bests and rank first in the SEC this season. Rousseau also set the Ohio State Invitational meet record in those events and helped the 800 free relay team to a 6:21.84 finish, an NCAA automatic qualifying time that ranks first in the SEC.
The Gators will be back in action this weekend as they open their dual meet season with back-to-back SEC road meets against Georgia on Thursday, October 25 at 3 p.m. and South Carolina Friday, October 26 at 2 p.m.
