Thursday November 29, 2012Gators Compete in Ohio State Invitational to Close out the Fall Season

Gainesville, Fla.

The University of Florida swimming and diving teams will travel to Columbus, Ohio for the seventh annual Ohio State Invitational that runs Friday, November 30 to Sunday, December 2. The meet will take place at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Gator men finished 4-0 and 3-0 in the SEC in dual meet action this fall and the women are 1-3 and 1-2 in the SEC.


The meet will feature six menís teams and nine womenís teams spanning six different conferences. It will pit some of the top schools against each other in a tough three day. Each of the nine womenís teams are ranked in the CSCAA top-25 with No. 5 Texas (3-1), No. 6 Stanford (2-1), No. 11 Florida (1-3), No. 14 Indiana (2-2), No. 15 North Carolina (2-1), No. 16 Ohio State (4-1), No. 20 Purdue (3-0), No. 21 Notre Dame (1-3) and No. 25 Wisconsin (4-4).


Floridaís women are coming off of a close meet against Florida State where they fell 143-157. Junior Elizabeth Beisel (North Kingstown, R.I.) led the way with wins in the 200 back and 200 IM and freshman Jessica Thielmann (Newcastle, England) added wins in the 500 and 1000 free to sweep the distance events.


On the menís side, the five of the six teams are ranked in the latest CSCAA poll with No. 5 Florida (4-0), No. 7 Indiana (4-2), No. 10 Ohio State (4-0), No. 17 North Carolina (3-0) and No. 24 Purdue (2-1). So far this season the Gators have faced four ranked opponents, most recently taking the win over rival Florida State on the road where they won 10 events. Sophomore Matt Elliott (Peoria, Ill.) took first in both the 100 and 200 breast and junior Marcin Cieslak (Warsaw, Poland) had wins in the 200 free and 100 fly.


There will be prelims each morning and then finals in the afternoon. The prelims will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday with the finals following at 6 p.m. On Saturday the prelims will begin at 10 a.m. with finals at 5 p.m. and Sunday prelims will be 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. finals.
