Saturday November 17, 2012Saturday's Meeting with Jacksonville State Designated as "Saluting Those Who Serve" Game
The University Athletic Association, Inc. is hosting its annual Saluting Those Who Serve event Saturday, November 17 at the Florida Football game versus Jacksonville State. The game is set to kickoff at 1 p.m. in The Swamp.
As a part of Saluting Those Who Serve, throughout the game various military members, veterans and local first responders will be recognized for their service to our community and country.
The groups that will be participating in Saturday’s game will be University of Florida Student Veterans, UF ROTC branches, Alachua County Fire Rescue, University Police Department, Gainesville Police Department, Alachua Sheriff’s Office, Gainesville Fire Rescue and Florida Highway Patrol.
Before the game there will be a BBQ hosted by the UF Collegiate Veterans Society, where any veteran who is attending the game can stop by and eat. The food and resources will be provided by the VA OIF/OEF Transition Team, and the food will be catered by CowboyZ BBQ. It will be located outside of Van Fleet Hall (ROTC building).
The Honorary Captain for the game will be Korean War Veteran Corporal Duane Dewey, whose commemorative Medal of Honor coin will be used for the game’s coin toss. Dewey received the Medal of Honor for his heroics during the Korean War.
During the game fans are encouraged to tweet to thank those who are serving the United States by using the hashtag #GatorsSalute. The tweets will scroll on the boards throughout the game.
