Monday November 12, 2012Florida's Živa Recek Earns Fifth SEC Weekly Honor of 2012
Freshman outside hitter Živa Recek (Kočevje, Slovenia) has been named the Southeastern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in 2012, as she was recognized for her play last weekend at SEC rivals Missouri and Ole Miss. This is her third straight SEC weekly honor.
Recek is the first Gator to receive five weekly conference nods in Florida program history. Recek breaks the previous record of four held by Florida’s first four-time AVCA All-American Kelly Murphy (2010) and former Gator All-SEC libero Elyse Cusack (2008, 2009).
The Kočevje, Slovenia native averaged 5.33 kills/set against the Tigers and the Rebels, putting down 17 and 15 kills, respectively. Recek surpassed her season average in nearly every category, including averaging 5.92 points/set on the weekend.
Recek has previously been named the SEC Freshman of the Week three times in 2012 and was also honored as the SEC Offensive Player of the Week for her performances against Arkansas and Kentucky at home earlier this year. Recek leads Florida in kills with 349 (4.01/set) and ranks in the SEC’s top five in kills and points (387.5).
Recek currently ranks second in Florida program history in kills per set for a freshman, as her average puts her directly behind three-time AVCA All-American and three-time SEC Player of the Year Aury Cruz (4.32 kills/set) during her freshman campaign. Recek needs just one more point to break the top-five for points scored by a freshman at UF, as she will move into fifth over two-time AVCA All-American Benavia Jenkins.
The mention is Florida’s seventh SEC weekly honor of the 2012 season, as junior middle blocker Chloe Mann (Gainesville, Fla.) was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week and sophomore libero Taylor Unroe (Muncie, Ind.) was honored as the SEC Defensive Player of the Week.
Florida returns home for their final regular season weekend at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. The Gators welcome the LSU Tigers for their first and only matchup of the season on Friday evening. First serve is set for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN 850/900. On Sunday, the Gators host the South Carolina Gamecocks on Florida’s Senior Day. The match, honoring Betsy Smith, Sundai Weston, and Tangerine Wiggs, will air live on Sun Sports and ESPN 850/900.
First serve is set for 1:30 p.m. ET. Florida has a three-match lead in the SEC standings heading into the final weekends of SEC play, and the Gators must win two more matches to take home the Southeastern Conference title outright. Florida can also claim the title with one more victory if SEC foe Tennessee suffers a loss on Friday evening.
