Friday November 9, 2012Christy Named Semifinalist for Ray Guy Award

Gainesville, Fla.

Sophomore punter Kyle Christy (Brownsburg, Ind.) has been named a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award, announced by the Augusta Sports Council on Friday.

Christy is one of 10 candidates up for the award, which honors the top collegiate punter.  In just his second season with the Gators, Christy has emerged as one of the top punters in the nation. Through nine games, the Brownsburg, Ind. native is fifth in the nation and leads the SEC in punting, averaging 46.74 yards per punt (47 punts, 2,197 yards).

He had a career performance on Oct. 20 against South Carolina, where he set the UF single-game record with a 54.3 punt average in the game, the second-best single-season average this year, on seven punts for 380 yards. He also holds a season-long punt of 62 yards against the Gamecocks and three 60-plus yard punts in his career.

Christy was also named the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week after the Gators’ win over South Carolina.

Florida is one of two schools in the country to place both their punter and kicker on the Lou Groza and Ray Guy l semifinalist lists, as Caleb Sturgis (St. Augustine) was named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award earlier in the week. Ball State is the other school that placed both a kicker and punter on the awards lists.

The candidates were evaluated on their overall statistics and contribution to the team.  Particular emphasis was placed on the punter’s net average, percentage of total punts inside the 20-yard line and percentage of punts not returned.  A national voting body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) coaches, sports information directors, national media and former Ray Guy Award winners will decide the three award finalists, who will be announced on November 19.  Voters will then cast a second round of ballots to decide the winner.

The presentation of the Ray Guy Award will be featured on The Home Depot College Football Awards live on Thursday, December 6 at 7:30 pm ET on ESPN.
