The University of Florida’s Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) and Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium) will compete in the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean National King Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., that gets underway on Thursday.

Embree received No. 1 overall seed in the 32-player singles draw and will play Ole Miss’ Caroline Rohde-Moe in the first round, while Collins drew Princeton’s Amanda Muliawan, who won the ITA Northeast Region Championships, and Oyen battles Columbia’s Nicole Bartnik, who received Columbia University’s wild card as the host school.

This four-day event is one of the collegiate Grand Slams and takes place at the home of the U.S. Open Championships. Hosted by Columbia University, this prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw.

As winner of the 2012 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, Embree received an automatic berth into the 32-player singles main draw of the collegiate grand slam event. Embree captured her first collegiate Grand Slam title when she won the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in October. That has been the only collegiate event of the fall for Embree, who is 96-13 in her singles career, including a 5-0 record this year.

Collins, a freshman who received the USTA’s wildcard into the event, has been impressive, racing out to an 11-2 singles record, highlighted by her showing at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, where she played her way through prequalifying and qualifying to reach the main draw, where she advanced to the round of 16.

Oyen received an ITA at-large berth into the tournament and is 10-2 this season and reached the final of the ITA Southeast Regional Championships, just missing an automatic berth into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships after a 7-6, 7-6 loss in the final.

Ken Thomas of RadioTennis.com will be on site throughout the week starting Thursday, providing a live broadcast beginning at 10:15 am ET each day.

This is the third year for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships to be held at the home of the US Open. In an effort to draw more awareness to the event, this year’s Championships was pushed back a week to not conflict with the annual New York City Marathon. That decision proved to be a wise one with Hurricane Sandy hitting the East Coast early last week.
