Freshman outside hitter Živa Recek (Kočevje, Slovenia) has been named the Southeastern Conference’s Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week and third time in 2012, as she was recognized for her play last weekend against SEC rivals Georgia and Tennessee.
Recek is the first Gator to receive four weekly nods in the same year since Florida’s first four-time AVCA All-American Kelly Murphy in 2010. Recek ties Murphy’s record of three SEC Freshman of the Week accolades in a single season, as Murphy was named SEC Freshman of the Week three times and SEC Offensive Player of the Week once en route to SEC Freshman of the Year and consensus National Freshman of the Year honors in 2008. Recek joins Murphy and former Gator All-SEC libero Elyse Cusack as the only Florida volleyball athletes to be honored four times by the conference in a single season, as Cusack did so twice (2008, 2009) in her career.
In Florida’s 3-0 sweep of Georgia, Recek tallied 12 kills and a match-high 11 digs for her fifth double-double of her young career. Her performance against Tennessee was nothing short of remarkable as the Slovenia native registered another double-double with career highs in both kills (26) and digs (20). Recek became the first Gator to register 20+ kills and digs since Kisya Killingsworth recorded 23 kills and 20 digs on Sept. 17, 2006 at South Carolina. Recek recorded the most kills by a Gator since Jane Collymore collected 30 kills against USC (Sept. 10, 2005).
Recek was recognized last week for her play against then-No. 12 Florida State and Mississippi State, as well for her performances earlier in the season against then-No. 2 Texas and then-No. 9 Stanford at the Nike Big Four Classic. Recek was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week just a few short weeks ago following the Gators’ matches at home against Arkansas and Kentucky.
The mention is Florida’s sixth SEC weekly honor of the 2012 season, as junior middle blocker Chloe Mann (Gainesville, Fla.) was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week two weeks ago and sophomore libero Taylor Unroe (Muncie, Ind.) was honored as the SEC Defensive Player of the Week after the Gators’ SEC opening weekend at Arkansas and Kentucky.
Florida hits the road next weekend to play Missouri and Ole Miss for a second time in 2012. The Gators travel to Mizzou for the first time in program history, facing off against the Tigers at the Hearnes Center on Friday evening at 8 p.m. ET. The Orange and Blue take on the Rebels in Oxford at 2:30 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon. The Gators swept both the Tigers and the Rebels earlier in the season.
