Thursday November 1, 2012Men's Tennis to Participate in USTA Clay Court Invitational at Disney
Four members of the Florida men’s tennis team will travel to Orlando this weekend to participate in the 2012 USTA Clay Court Invitational at Disney, hosted by Florida State. The event runs Nov. 2-4 at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex.
“It’s going to be a tough tournament. There are some really good teams participating,” said head coach Bryan Shelton. “The USTAs are bringing some of their top juniors from their player development. It’s going to be a great event, a great experience.”
There are three singles draws and two doubles draws for the event. In the Gold singles draw are senior Billy Federhofer (North Miami) and redshirt freshman Gordon Watson (Naples). In the Maroon singles draw is freshman Luke Johnson (Leeds, England), and making his tournament debut as a Gator is redshirt freshman Thomas Proisy (Saint Nom La Breteche, France) in the Spear singles division. In doubles play, Federhofer and Watson are entered in the Gold division of doubles, while Johnson and Proisy are entered in the Maroon doubles division.
“I feel like they’re ready to go out there and perform,” said Shelton. “I feel like as a team we’re improving through this fall. I feel like they’ve adjusted to the workload, as far as the off-court conditioning and weight training and everything that we’re doing to kind of build their fitness. I feel like our guys are very fit right now. Still not completely where we need to be ultimately, but they’ve definitely taken steps in the right direction. Mentally, they’re more aware of what their strengths are and what the game plan should be going into each match based on the style of player they’re going to play against. I think from the mental standpoint and the physical standpoint they’re more prepared than they were two months ago.”
Results will be posted on GatorZone.com at the end of each day. Complete draws for the event can be found online through Florida State’s web site.
