Tuesday October 30, 2012Diep Qualifies for Pensacola Futures Championship
University of Florida menís tennis player Florent Diep advanced through qualifying at the 2012 Pensacola Futures Championship this week to earn a berth in the Main Draw. Diep will face No. 8 seed Bjorn Fratangelo in the first round.
The clay court event will begin on Tuesday, but Diep is not scheduled to play in the first round until Wednesday. Diep will face a strong test in Fratangelo, who in 2011 became the first American to win the boysí singles title at the French Open since John McEnroe won in 1977.
A junior from Paris, France, Diep is one of eight players to advance through qualifying and earn a spot in the Main Draw of 32 singles players. On Monday, Diep beat former Florida State tennis player Jean-Yves Aubone, 6-7 (2), 6-2, 7-6 (4), to qualify.
Qualifying play began last Friday and ran through Monday. Diep earned a bye in the first round and defeated Csongor Toth, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, in the second round. Diep then faced fellow collegian James Chaudry of Mississippi State in Round 3. Diep led 4-1 before Chaudry was forced to retire.
