Tuesday October 30, 2012Rousseau and Werner Garner Swimmer of the Week Honors
Two members of the No. 1 Florida men’s swimming and diving team earned weekly honors, announced by the Southeastern Conference on Tuesday. Red-shirt junior Sebastien Rousseau (Cape Town, South Africa) and freshman Pawel Werner (Wroclaw, Poland) were named the SEC Male Swimmer and SEC Male Freshman Swimmer of the Week, respectively.
It is the first honor of the season for Florida’s men and the second for the Gators overall. The award comes after both had strong performances in back-to-back dual meet wins over No. 9 Georgia and No. 12 South Carolina.
For Rousseau, it is the first time he has earned a Swimmer of the Week honor in his career. The six-time All-American recorded five victories in seven events, including four individual wins for the Gators. He won the 200 butterfly in 1:45.73, the second fastest time in the nation, and swam to a 1:48.45 finish in the 200 IM, a time that ranks third in the nation. Rousseau swam four SEC top-20 times and recorded NCAA “B” cut times in the 200 free, 200 fly and 200 IM.
Werner won four events last week as Florida bested Georgia and South Carolina in a dual meet. He also had two second place finishes and a pair of third place finishes. His 1:37.04 finish in the 200 free ranks first in the SEC and fifth in the nation, while his 44:71 mark in the 100 free ranks eighth highest in the nation. He also set new personal bests in four events last week.
The Gators will return home as they play host to SEC newcomer Texas A&M on Friday, November 2 at 4 p.m. in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center.
