Sunday October 28, 2012Hedberg In Top Five After Round One; Gators Fourth at Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invite
Sophomore Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain) led the 2nd-ranked Florida Gator women’s golf team Sunday in the first round of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invite after being the only UF player in red numbers, shooting a 1-under (71) and going into round two tied for fifth place. Hedberg got a steady dose of pars to start her day on the front nine and she also scored two birdies before making the turn to jump to 2-under. Two bogeys on the back nine kept her near even par, but a birdie on the par five, 14th, got her back to 1-under, where she finished the day.
The Gators, as a team, completed the first day’s play tied for fourth at 5-over (293), nine shots back of leading team and SEC counterpart, 6th-ranked Alabama (-4, 284). UF was actually within two shots of the leading spot all day before some late bogeys pushed its score over par. Arkansas (E, 288) and No. 3 Arizona State (+2, 290) are the only two teams separating Florida from Alabama as the University of Denver (+6, 294) and host school, No. 19 Texas (+9, 297) round out the top six teams.
“Everyone did a good job of staying patient during a cold and breezy day,” Florida head coach Emily Bastel said. “Overall we had a good day. We did a pretty good job of managing our way around the course. Tomorrow, we are looking for a few more putts to drop and to improve on the mistakes we made today.”
Hedberg’s 71 is her sixth round under par this fall and fifth best this season. Her three birdies in today’s round also tied for the most on the team as senior Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) also had three birdies today, all on the front nine of the UT Golf Club. Piccio in her first tournament back since a 15th place finish at the Dale McNamara Invite in September, started out well with three birdies and only one bogey before making the turn. Sitting nicely at 2-under, Piccio looked to capitalize on the back nine, but suffered three setbacks with bogeys at No. 11, No. 13 and No. 17. The Philippines native was still able to finish at 1-over (73) and is in a tie for 19th place.
Florida actually finished Sunday’s round with three players in the top-20 as senior Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) also shot 1-over (73) and is only five shots back of the leader, Shu-Yin Liu of Tulsa. Lendl is coming off two straight wins in as many starts at the Dale McNamara Invite and the Tar Heel Invite and is well within striking distance of a third title with two rounds to play. Lendl was nothing short of consistent during her first round in Austin as she pared the first 12 holes she saw. A bogey at the par four, 13th, was the only blemish on the scorecard as it was pars the rest of the way for the Connecticut native. It’s only the second round over par for Lendl this fall. Her last round that was not even or better came all the way back in the third round of the Cougar Classic in early September, breaking a streak of six-straight rounds under par or even.
As for the remaining Gators in the field, junior Elcin Ulu (Istanbul, Turkey), in her second tournament as a member of the UF golf team is tied for 39th after carding a 4-over, 76, her second lowest round as a Gator. Ulu actually had a rough start to her day with a double-bogey at No. 2 and then two bogeys at No. 5 and No. 6. However, she was able to get things under control and birdied the par three, 8th hole. Ulu then pared holes nine through 17 before suffering another bogey on the 18th hole. Freshman Ursa Orehek (Domzale, Slovenia) rounded out the lineup this weekend as she also is tied for 39th place with a 4-over, 76. Out of 81 players in this weekend’s field, all five Florida players are in the top-40 after the first round.
Play will continue with the second round tomorrow as the first groups will tee off at 7:15 a.m. Live scoring as well as first round results can be found on GolfStat.com. Second round results will also be posted at TexasSports.com. A complete recap with results will be posted on GatorZone.com following the day’s play.
