Sunday October 21, 2012Oyen and Janowicz to Play for Singles Titles at ITA Southeast Regional Championships

Tampa, Fla.

Olivia Janowicz lost just one game in two singles matches on Sunday.

University of Florida juniors Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium) and Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.) both won two round of singles matches and advanced to the final of the main and back draws, respectively, at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships at the USF Varsity Courts on Sunday.

Oyen marched past a pair of nationally-ranked opponents, defeating South Florida’s 29th-ranked Ecaterina Vasenina and Georgia’s top-seeded and 37th-ranked Maho Kowase by identical 6-3, 6-0 decisions and advanced to the final where the 32nd-ranked and fifth-ranked Gator will play Georgia’s 53rd-ranked and seventh-seeded Lauren Herring at 11 a.m. on Monday.

Janowicz dropped her first round match in the main draw, but has stormed through the back draw and will play for the championship after posting an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win against Florida State’s 81st-ranked Francesca Segarelli in the quarterfinals and a 6-0, 6-0 double-bagel versus Miami’s Brittany Dubins in the semifinal. Janowicz takes on Georgia State’s Linn Timmermann on Monday morning.

“We were strong, determined and excellent in staying focused on the game plan,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist praised. “Our fitness level was again outstanding and we look forward to playing for two championships on Monday.”

Janowicz and freshman teammate Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) just missed a spot in the finals of the doubles draw, falling in the semifinals 8-3 to Georgia’s 30th-ranked and second-seeded Kate Fuller and Herring.

The singles and doubles champions from each of the 12 regionals earn a spot in the main draw of the USTA-ITA National Indoor Championships that is played Nov. 8-11 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., home of the U.S. Open Championships.

As winner of the 2012 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, Gator senior Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) received an automatic berth into the 32-player singles main draw of the collegiate grand slam event and is not competing at this weekend’s ITA Regional.

Nineteen schools from the states of Florida and Georgia comprise the ITA Southeast Regional and sent athletes to this weekend’s event hosted by the University of South Florida.

Schools in the ITA Southeast Region include Bethune-Cookman, Central Florida, Florida, Florida A&M, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida International, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Miami, North Florida, South Florida, Stetson and Wofford.
