Saturday October 20, 2012Florida Women Finish Third at SMU Classic

Gainesville, Fla.

In the second meet of the season, the University of Florida women’s swimming and diving team finished third at the SMU Classic with 289 points. Taking first place at the meet was Southern California with 366 points, followed by North Carolina with 292.50 points.

 

The Gators won the final event of the weekend as they took first in the 200 free relay. The group of freshman Natalie Hinds (Midland, Texas), senior Jamie Bohunicky (Gainesville, Fla.), Lindsey McKnight (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Kaitlin Frehling (St. Petersburg, Fla.) finished with a time of 1:32.84.

 

Junior Elizabeth Beisel (North Kingstown, R.I.) swam in two finals on the second night, earning third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:45.55 and coming in second in the 200 IM in 1:59.69. Fellow junior Hilda Luthersdottir (Harfnarfjordur, Iceland) finished fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.08) and sophomore Rebecca Rainer (Richmond, Va.) came in eighth in a time of 2:16.55. Luthersdottir added a ninth place finish in the 200 IM, touching in at 2:03.51.

 

In the 200 backstroke, freshman Ashlee Linn (Southfield, Mich) swam her way to a third place finish in a time of 1:57.65, as Hinds was 10th in 2:02.79. McKnight and Frehling took fifth (50.85) and eighth (50.78) respectively in the 100 free. Bohunicky was fifth in the 200 free in a time of 2:02.11 and Rainer took 11th with a 2:03.88.

 

The divers competed on the three-meter board on night two, freshman Emily Mosher (Cincinnati, Ohio) came in third for the Gators with a total score of 255.50.

The Gators will open the dual meet season on the road this week as they travel to Athens, Ga. to face Georgia Friday, October 25 and then will head to Columbia, S.C. to take on South Carolina Saturday, October 26.
