Friday October 12, 2012Lendl Goes Low, Finishes First Round of Tar Heel Invite Tied for Third

Chapel Hill, N.C.

Senior Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) was the only Gator to hit in red numbers Friday in the first round of the Tar Heel Invitational. Her 2-under, 70, puts her in a tie for third place on the individual board and helped the second-ranked University of Florida women’s golf team finish the first day of play in a tie for ninth place in the team standings. Lendl easily had the best day for Florida as she holed four birdies through 16 holes, with her only blemishes coming on her final two holes, which were both bogeys, completing her day at 2-under. The Connecticut native will only be three shots back of the leader, Hayley Davis of Baylor, who is at 5-under.

As a team, Florida had a tough day in some tough conditions on the Finley Golf Course going 13-over (301) as a team and finishing the day 15 strokes back of the leader, Virginia, which shot 2-under (286) on Friday. Across the board, the Gators had eight birdies altogether, but half of those birdies came from Lendl alone. Only Lendl and sophomore Anna Young (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada) had more than one birdie through the first round.

“Isabelle (Lendl) had a good round today,” Florida head coach Emily Bastel said. “She played very steady and stayed patient the entire day. This golf course is very tough, however. We made a bunch of unforced errors that cost us. The key is to learn from our mistakes. We still have two more days to redeem ourselves.”

Lendl’s round of 70 is tied for her third best of the year so far. Her other 70 came in the second round of the season-opening Cougar Classic. As for the remaining Gators, sophomore Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain) had a tough start to her day, carding four bogeys after 11 holes before finally getting things under control and actually birdieing the par-four 15th and finishing at 3-over (75). Hedberg sits in a tie for 30th going into round two, eight shots back of the leader.

Freshman Ursa Orehek (Domzale, Slovenia) had a very identical day to Hedberg. She started off the day with a birdie on No. 2 and was 1-under upon reaching the eighth hole. However, five bogeys on the next six holes put Orehek in a hole that too tough to come out of. The Slovenian was able to right the ship and par out holes 14 through 18 and finish with a 4-over, 76. Orehek will be in a tie for 41st when the second round begins on Saturday.

The final two Gators in the field, Young and junior Elcin Ulu (Istanbul, Turkey) did not fare much better on the day. Ulu, making her Gator debut, had two bogeys through the first nine on No. 2 and No. 4 and then double-bogeyed the par-four, 11th, putting her at 4-over through 11. The doubles took away any momentum Ulu was able to muster at the turn as she bogeyed four more holes to end the round at 8-over, 80. Ulu is in a tie for 78th heading into round two. Young had two birdies in her round, but her undoing was four double-bogeys and six bogeys to finish with a 12-over, 84. Young will start Friday’s round in a tie for 93rd.

11th-ranked Virginia leads all teams after the first round of play with a score of 2-under (286). No. 22 North Carolina and Baylor both sit in second place at even par (288). SEC counterpart, LSU is in fourth place at 6-over (294), while top-ranked Duke rounds out the top-five at 8-over (296).

Play will continue tomorrow with the first groups teeing off at 8:51 a.m. Live scoring as well as full first round results are available on GolfStat.com. Results can also be found throughout the day on TarHeelBlue.com. A complete recap with results will be posted on GatorZone.com following the day’s play.
