Monday October 8, 2012Gillislee, Elam Named SEC Players of the Week
Senior running back Mike Gillislee (DeLand, Fla.) and junior defensive back Matt Elam (Palm Beach Garden, Fla.) have been named SEC Players of the Week, announced by the league on Monday. Gillislee is the Offensive Player of the Week, while Elam is the co-Defensive Player of the Week.
Gillislee and Elam led a balanced attack in the Gators’ 14-6 win over No. 4 LSU Saturday in The Swamp to earn the weekly award for the first time in each of their careers. Gillislee rushed for 146 yards on a career-high 34 carries, his second-best rushing performance on the season behind a 148-yard rushing performance against Bowling Green, and scored both Gator touchdowns on the afternoon. His 146 yards was the highest total that an opponent has racked up against LSU since Arkansas’ Kniles Davis ran for 152 yards on Nov. 27, 2010. The SEC’s leading rusher has three 100-yard performances this season and has averaged 130.5 yards against two ranked opponents, which is second-best nationally among running backs that have appeared in at least two games. In five games this year, Gillislee has gained 548 yards on 103 attempts (5.3 avg.) and has totaled seven rushing touchdowns.
Elam ignited a Gator defense that handed LSU its first regular-season loss since 2010. In the third quarter, Elam forced a fumble following a 56-yard reception that set up the game-winning touchdown for the Orange and Blue, while leading the team with seven solo tackles, including a tackle for loss. He anchored a defensive unit that held the Tigers to 33 consecutive snaps without a first down and has limited two-consecutive SEC opponents to under six points for the first time since 1988. UF’s defense also allowed just eight first downs in Saturday’s contest, the second-fewest against a ranked team in school history. LSU had one rushing first down, the fewest against Florida since a contest versus Alabama on Nov. 6, 1999. The No. 4/6 Gators (5-0, 4-0 SEC) return to action at Vanderbilt (2-3, 1-2 SEC) on Saturday at 6 p.m. on ESPNU.
