Sunday October 7, 2012Gator Running Back Mike Gillislee Named Walter Camp Offensive Player of the Week

Gainesville, Fla.

University of Florida senior running back Mike Gillislee (DeLand, Fla.) was named National Offensive Player of the Week on Sunday by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, presented by Generation UCAN.

This is the ninth year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its National Football Bowl Subdivision Player of the Week during the regular season. Oregon State senior cornerback Jordan Poyer was the defensive honoree. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Foundation.

Gillislee earned the award after rushing for 146 yards on a career-high 34 carries and scoring two touchdowns in Florida’s 14-6 win over fourth-ranked LSU. His 146 yards were the most for an individual versus LSU since 2010. It was the third game this season that he has scored at least two touchdowns and the third time in his career that he has rushed for over 100 yards. In addition, Gillislee’s 34 rushing attempts against LSU tied for the third-most in a game by a Gator behind the 41 by Errict Rhett versus Georgia in 1993 and the 39 by Emmitt Smith versus Alabama in 1987.

LSU had been allowing just 83 rushing yards a game entering the contest. Gillislee had two 12-yard scoring runs in the second half as Florida improved to 5-0, 4-0 in the SEC. The Gators return to action at Vanderbilt (2-3, 1-2 SEC) next Saturday at 6 p.m. on ESPNU.
