Monday October 1, 2012Five Gators Set for Action in Qualifying Draw of Riviera/ITA All-American Championships

Caroline Hitmana is 3-0 on the singles court this season.

Five members of the University of Florida women’s tennis team will compete in the qualifying draw of the 2012 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships that begins Tuesday at the Riviera Tennis Club.

The two-day event serves as a feeder into the main draw of the national tournament, with eight spots available to qualifiers. Competitors need to win three singles matches to advance, while doubles teams also need to win three to take one of the four spots held in the main draw.

Action begins with doubles play, where the Gator team of Alexandra Cercone and Sofie Oyen face Illinois’ Melissa Kopinski and Rachael White at 9 a.m. PT.

Play then moves to the singles courts and the 64-player draw, where UF’s Cercone and Oyen are joined by teammates Danielle Collins, Caroline Hitimana and Olivia Janowicz.

Oyen, ranked No. 32 in the country, takes on Texas Tech’s 76th-ranked Samantha Adams, while No. 78 Hitimana drew Southern California’s No. 55 Caroline Rohde-Moe, Collins takes on Virginia’s No. 77 Li Xi, Janowicz meets Utah’s Sarah Pham and No. 49 Cercone faces Texas A&M’s No. 38-ranked Nazari Urbina.

The first wave of singles matches begins at 10:45 a.m. PT and there will be two rounds played on Tuesday.

Senior All-American Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) begins action in the main draw, held Oct. 4-7 at the Riviera Tennis Club, where she will play singles and doubles, partnering with Collins.
