Los Angeles

Danielle Collins improved to 6-0 in her singles career.

The University of Florida’s Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.) both won their third match in two days and advanced to the qualifying draw of the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

The only two Gators competing in the pre-qualifying draw of the national event, Collins and Janowicz earned their way into the qualifying portion of the tournament and begin action in the 64-player draw that will be played Oct. 2-3 at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

“This was as good as we have ever looked in the pre-qualifying draw of this event,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “Danielle and Olivia both looked powerful, fit and mentally strong during their matches, not only today but throughout their three matches to advance. I’m proud of how their performed and look forward to seeing them after a day of rest and back on the court for their next matches.”

Collins improved to 6-0 on the singles court in her young collegiate career after posting a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Texas’ Elizabeth Begley on Sunday to capture one of the eight open spots in the qualifying draw.

Janowicz topped Iowa’s Ruth Seaborne 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 and reached next stage of the tournament, joining Gator teammates Alexandra Cercone (Seminole, Fla.), Caroline Hitimana (Waterloo, Belgium) and Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium), each of whom earned an automatic spot in the qualifying singles draw, with Cercone and Oyen also competing in the doubles draw.

“The competition gets more challenging every round of the Riviera and I’m excited to see how we respond at that next level,” Thornqvist said.

Senior All-American Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) begins action in the main draw, held Oct. 4-7 at the Riviera Tennis Club, where she will play singles and doubles, partnering with Collins.
