Freshman Danielle Collins won her collegiate debut singles and doubles matches.

Five Gators notched singles victories during the opening day of action the Univ. of Michigan Women’s Tennis Wolverine Invitational on Friday at the Varsity Tennis Center.

Florida freshmen Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Brianna Morgan (Beverly Hills, Calif.) won their respective collegiate singles debuts, while junior Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.), junior Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium and senior Caroline Hitimana (Waterloo, Belgium) also netted victories in the team’s first competition of the fall season.

The Gators squared off against players from the University of Iowa on the singles courts, where Collins defeated Christina Harazin, 6-0, 6-4, and Morgan downed Annette Dohanics, 6-3, 6-0. Janowicz took care of Shelby Talcott, 6-3, 6-4, Oyen earned a 6-3, 7-5 win against Katie Zordani and Hitimana was impressive in her 6-1, 6-0 decision versus Catilin Hindmarsh.

Alexandra Cercone (Seminole, Fla.) was the lone Gator unable to pull out a win, falling in a tough 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 finale to Ruth Seaborne.

In doubles action, Collins and Janowicz teamed for an 8-3 win against Arizona State’s Joanna Smith and Stephanie Vlad. That was the only successful Gator pairing in the morning, as Hitimana and Morgan fell to Michigan’s Sarah Lee and Amy Zhu, 9-7, while Cercone and Oyen lost to ASU’s Hanna James and Desirae Krawczyk, 8-3.

“We started a bit rusty in doubles and that can be expected since this was our first tournament and competition of the year,” UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. “We really regrouped and played a lot better in singles. I liked the passion and energy we came out and showed on the court. Our upperclassmen did a great job of getting everyone fired up for the afternoon and it showed.”

The Gators continue action at the individual, non-flighted event on Saturday morning, when the team begins with doubles matches against Michigan at 10 a.m. ET, before facing members from Utah and Western Michigan later in the day in singles play.
