Monday September 17, 2012Driskel Named SEC Offensive Player of the Week

Gainesville, Fla.

Sophomore quarterback Jeff Driskel (Oviedo, Fla.) has been named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week, announced by the league on Monday. Driskel earns the award for his performance in the Gatorsí 37-20 victory over Tennessee and is the first weekly honor of his career.

Driskel shined under center for the Gators, as he was 14-for-20 and amassed 300 total yards of offense (219 yards passing and 81 yards rushing) in the programís eighth-straight win over the Vols.† He led an offensive attack that racked up 555 total yards in the win, the most by a Florida team in a SEC game since 2001 and the most at Neyland Stadium since 1988.† Driskel had a passer rating of 195, which was the highest by a Florida quarterback in an SEC road game since 2007, when Tim Tebow had a 202.7 rating in a victory over Kentucky.

Under Driskelís direction, the UF offense scored 37 points, the most it has scored in Knoxville since 1984 and led a second-half rally in which he threw for 99 yards and both touchdowns after the break.†

The sophomore quarterback also threw for two touchdowns, including a 23-yard pass to Jordan Reed (New London, Conn.) in the end zone that gave the Gators a 27-20 lead in the third quarter that they never relinquished. He also threw a career-long 75-yard pass to Frankie Hammond, Jr. (Hollywood, Fla.) in the fourth quarter.† Driskel had a season-long 28-yard rush in the second quarter.

With the win, Driskel became the fifth Gator quarterback to emerge victorious over Tennessee, joining the likes of Danny Wuerffel (1993), Doug Johnson (1997), Tebow (2008) and John Brantley (2010).

Driskel currently ranks fourth in the SEC in pass efficiency (170.2), as he is 37-of-52 (71.2%) passing for 495 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions on the season. †

Following two-straight SEC road triumphs, the No. 14 Gators (3-0/2-0 SEC) return to The Swamp for their SEC home opener against Kentucky (1-2/0-0 SEC) at 12:21 p.m. on Saturday.
