Sunday September 16, 2012Watson Advances to Bedford Cup Singles Final; Alford and Diep to Play for Doubles Title
Three Gators advanced to finals action on Sunday afternoon at the 2012 Bedford Cup, hosted by Florida at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville. Redshirt freshman Gordon Watson (Naples, Fla.) advanced to the singles final, while juniors Mike Alford (Tampa, Fla.) and Florent Diep (Paris, France) will play in the doubles final.
Both the singles and doubles final will begin at 9 a.m. on the stadium courts at Linder Stadium.
Three Gators competed in singles quarterfinals on Sunday, with Alford and Watson advancing to the semifinals to face each other. Alford defeated Guillermo de Vilchez of USF in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, while Watson beat USF’s Ravi Patel, 6-3, 6-2. Diep dropped his quarterfinal match to No. 7 seed Moritz Buerchner of UNF, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Watson pulled out a three-set win over Alford in the afternoon heat, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, to reach the finals against Buerchner, who beat USF’s Federico Sabogal, 6-0, 3-6, 6-0.
In doubles action, Alford and Diep continued their success together, breezing past Buerchner and Julien Belair, 8-1. The Gator duo will face off against Florida State’s Andres Bucaro and Benjamin Lock in the final. Bucaro and Lock defeated their FSU teammates Cristian Gonzales and Joao Gauer, 8-6, in the semifinal.
