A penalty kick from each team provided all the scoring of the opening half. Florida was awarded a penalty kick in the 12th minute when the senior All-American Erika Tymrak was fouled in the box. Fellow senior McKenzie Barney successfully converted the first PK of her collegiate career. It was the first PK awarded to the Gators this season, with the last coming Sept. 25, 2011 at Tennessee.

The score was knotted in the 30th minute when the Gators were cited with a foul in the box, giving the Wildcats their second penalty kick of the season. Arin Gilliland hit her attempt to give UK its first successful PK of 2012.

A goal off a corner kick gave the Wildcats the final 2-1 margin early in the second half. Courtney Roetzman scored her first goal of the season off the scrum following the kick from Danielle Krohn.

The Gators controlled the play for much of the rest of the match as the Wildcats put numbers behind the ball, but couldn’t find the equalizing goal. Barney nearly added a goal in the run of play in the 59th minute. Havana Solaun, from deep in the Wildcat half, sent a cross which found Barney at the far post, but UK goalkeeper Kayla King made one of her six saves of the evening to thwart the Gator attack. Claire Falknor sent a ball to fellow freshman Brooke Smith making an overlapping run down the right side of the box in the 72nd minute, but her shot was wide of the post. With six minutes remaining, Tymrak brought the ball into the box and sent it right. The ball returned to her but she couldn’t get a shot off before it was cleared.

Discipline was on the Gators’ minds following the match, as UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh thought the Gators needed to better abide by their action plan to get positive results.

“For us offensively, it is always going to be a challenge when a team sits in like that. They sat in for quite a bit of the rest of the game. That is a smart tactic on their part,” Burleigh said. “We had our chances and ultimately again, I think it takes a little bit more discipline for us to finish.

“Sometimes it is just a matter of playing a little bit harder and a little bit smarter,” she continued. “We need to have discipline to make runs in the box, picking up weak side players – just little things. It is nothing major. This team has some incredible talent and we have to be more disciplined to be more successful.”

Barney echoed Burleigh’s comments.

“Once they were up, they brought more people behind the ball so it made it a bit more difficult for us to play. But we’ve seen it before. I think it was more of what we didn’t do,” Barney said. “We always say that our biggest enemy can be ourselves. We weren’t disciplined in the way we were moving the ball and because they were sitting in, we didn’t get as many chances as we should have.”
