Thursday September 13, 2012Florida Men's Tennis Set to Host 2012 Bedford Cup this Weekend
The University of Florida menís tennis team will host the 2012 Bedford Cup this weekend, Friday through Monday, at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville.
The Bedford Cup was started in 2011 to feature the top collegiate menís tennis players from all 11 NCAA Division I menís tennis programs in the state of Florida. It is sponsored by the Youth Tennis Foundation of Florida, Inc., and the Edward T. Bedford Foundation. USF hosted the inaugural event last fall in Tampa.
The Gators will welcome players from 10 other schools, all within the state of Florida, to compete in a singles draw and doubles draw. Participants from Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida State, Miami, North Florida, Stetson, UCF and USF will take part in a singles draw of 64 and doubles draw of 32.
Action will begin on Friday at 9:00 a.m. with the first round of doubles play, with the second round of doubles immediately following. First round singles matches will begin no earlier than 12:45 p.m.
Five Florida players will participate in the event: senior Bob van Overbeek, juniors Mike Alford and Florent Diep, redshirt freshman Gordon Watson and freshman Luke Johnson. Van Overbeek is the tournamentís No. 1 overall seed, while Alford is No. 2 and Diep is No. 4. Alford and Diep will pair in doubles as the No. 3 seed while van Overbeek and Watson will team up for the first time as doubles partners.
There will be no live scoring for the event, but an updated bracket will be posted online each day at the conclusion of play. The schedule for the event is listed below.
