Former University of Florida cornerback Steve Tannen was named a part of the 2012 class of SEC Football Legends on Thursday, September 13 by the Southeastern Conference office. One former player from each member of the conference was recognized.
Tannen was a member of the Gators football team from 1967-69. In his final season, Tannen garnered First Team All-American honors. In addition, he was voted the top defensive back in the conference in 1969. He also was a two-year All-SEC choice in his time at Gainesville.
The Miami native was a key contributor on special teams, as well. Tannen still holds the UF record (with four others) for the most punt return touchdowns in a season with two. He was also noted for his kick blocking skills, blocking three in 1969 with one being returned for a touchdown in the 14-13 win against Tennessee in the Gator Bowl.
Tannen became the fifth Gator to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft in 1970 when he was selected 20th overall by the New York Jets. He went on to play for the Jets for four seasons.
