Monday September 10, 2012Mike Alford and Florent Diep Win Doubles Title at Southern Intercollegiate Championships
The University of Florida men’s tennis team brought home its first title of the 2012-13 season on Monday, as juniors Mike Alford (Tampa) and Florent Diep (Paris, France) teamed up to win the Division I Doubles Title at the 45th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships, hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens.
Alford and Diep, who paired together just three times last season, won two matches on Monday to claim the title. In their semifinal match against Jordan Angus and Pedro Dumont of Mississippi State, the Gator duo won, 8-3, to advance to the Final against the No. 5-8-seeded pair of Dominique Maden and Yannick Maden from Clemson. Alford and Diep kept their momentum going from the early match and beat the Clemson pair, 8-5, to win the tournament.
“Mike and Flo did a great job representing the Gators,” said head coach Bryan Shelton. “The Southern Intercollegiate has one of the longest-standing traditions in country and to be able to put your name in that tradition is special. It’s also my first tournament win as a Gator and that’s special for me too. I’m looking forward to having a lot more success with this team.”
Alford and Diep beat Gabriel Echeverry and Jordi Vives from Florida Gulf Coast, 8-5, in the opening round. In the Round of 16, the UF pair was given a walkover against Johan Backstrom and Jonas Lutjen of Ole Miss and advanced to face No. 4 seed James Chaudry and Malte Stropp from Mississippi State in the Quarterfinals. Alford and Diep pulled out a tiebreak win against the Bulldogs, 9-8 (3), to earn their spot in Monday’s Semifinal.
“I’m really proud of the guys this weekend,” said Coach Shelton. “It’s always nice to be the last ones standing at end of a tournament.”
In singles action this weekend, Alford and senior Bob van Overbeek (Florida) both advanced to the Quarterfinals. Alford, seeded 9-16, won his first round match in three sets against Rhys Johnson before beating Marco Nunez of Georgia in the second round and Backstrom in the Round of 16 in straight sets. Van Overbeek opened with a straight-set win over Syrym Abdukhalikov of Tennessee Tech, came from behind to beat Jordan Angus of Mississippi State in three sets in the second round and beat Ryan Lipman of Vanderbilt, 7-5, 6-1, in the Round of 16.
Diep reached the Round of 16 on Saturday before falling to No. 5-8 seed Hernus Pieters of Georgia, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. Redshirt freshman Gordon Watson (Naples) won his first round match but dropped his second round match to No. 5-8 seed Stropp, 6-4, 6-3.
Senior Billy Federhofer (North Miami) and freshman Luke Johnson (Leeds, England) both lost in the first round of singles action.
