Thursday September 6, 2012Swimming and Diving Announces 2012-13 Schedule

Gainesville, Fla.

The University of Florida swimming and diving team has announced their 2012-13 competition schedule. The schedule, released Thursday by Head Coach Gregg Troy, will feature seven dual meets and three regular season invitationals.

There will be five home events, including the All Florida Invitational that will take place September 28-30 to kick off the season. This will be the third annual All Florida Invitational, in which teams from around Florida will come to Gainesville to compete in a state-wide tournament at the O’Connell Center.

The Gator women will then head out to Dallas, Texas to compete in the SMU Classic Oct. 19-20, while the men’s event will be held Jan. 18-19. Last season’s invite featured six nationally-ranked teams from six different conferences.

The entire month of October will be spent on the road as Florida will face SEC opponents Georgia and South Carolina in a tough two day stretch. They will travel to Athens, Ga. to face the Bulldogs October 25th and head to Columbia, S.C. to face the Gamecocks the very next day, October 26th. Georgia’s women are the defending SEC Champions and finished second at NCAAs last season.

In the first home dual meet, the Gators will host SEC newcomers Texas A&M on November 2nd at 4:00 p.m. The Aggies’ women finished sixth at the NCAA Championships last season. The Gators will then travel to Tallahassee to face in-state rivals Florida State on November 15th at 4 p.m.

To close out the fall meet schedule, Florida heads to Columbus, Ohio to participate in the eighth-annual Ohio State Buckeye Invitational. The invite will also include North Carolina, Indiana, Wisconsin and Notre Dame’s women’s team.

Three dual meets lead up to the SEC Championships, two of which will be at home. Florida Atlantic will come to Gainesville on Saturday, January 19th then Florida will head to Auburn on Saturday, January 26th. Auburn has been the SEC Champion on the men’s side for 16 consecutive seasons. The regular season will conclude with a showdown in the O’Connell Center against SEC foe Tennessee on Friday, February 1st.

The Southeastern Conference Championships will take place from February 19-23 in College Station, Texas. Texas A&M will play host to its first conference championship as a member of the SEC. After that Florida will travel to the Bulldog Last Chance Meet and host the Gator Last Chance Invite where swimmers can compete to qualify for the NCAA Championship.

The Orange and Blue divers will compete in the NCAA Diving Zone Championships taking place in Knoxville, Tenn. March 11-13. Both the men’s and women’s NCAA Championship meets will be held in Indianapolis, Ind., with the women competing March 21-23 and the men’s being held a week later from March 28-30.

Florida returns 44 letter-winners, 26 men and 18 women, from the 2011-12 squad that saw the men finish eighth at the NCAA Championship and the women took tenth. This includes 2012 Olympic medalist Elizabeth Beisel (USA), who will be returning for her junior year with the Gators. Also returning is Sebastien Rousseau (South Africa) after taking a year off to train for the Olympics. Six total 2012 Olympians will be competing for Florida this season, with senior Sarra Lajnef (Tunisia), juniors Hilda Luthersdottir (Iceland) and Marcin Cieslak (Poland) and freshman Sinead Russell (Canada) joining Beisel and Rousseau. The Gators will have 18 newcomers for the upcoming season.
