Tuesday September 4, 2012Freshman XC Athlete Julie Macedo Tabbed SEC Women's Runner of the Week
First-year Gator cross country runner Julie Macedo (Wilmington, Del.) reeled in UF’s initial SEC Cross Country Athlete of the Week honor of the season Tuesday, tabbed this week’s SEC Women’s Runner of the Week after her season-opening two-mile victory at the Western Carolina Invitational Aug. 31.
Macedo and the Gators put on a show in Cullowhee, N.C., as the Orange and Blue opened 2012 with team victories on both the men’s and women’s sides last Friday under the tutelage of new UF distance track and cross country coach Paul Spangler. Macedo helped lead a pack of five Gators that all recorded top-10 finishes, while Florida claimed the top four spots in the 74-athlete women’s field en route to a 17-point first-place finish.
Macedo clocked an 11:14.4 two-mile run in Cullowhee with three Gator finishers on her heels, becoming the first UF runner since Gator great and 2012 Australian Olympian Genevieve LaCaze (2008) to win her first race as a freshman donning the Orange and Blue. Her two-mile mark is the best in the league through the first week of competition.
In addition to the women’s squad success, the men’s team posted a 19-point victory under the direction of senior Josh Izewski (Doylestown, Pa.). Izewski earned just his second collegiate victory since winning UF’s 2010 Mountain Dew Invitational with a career-best 5K (15:14.1) after shaving nearly 29 seconds off his previous personal best, established last season in Cullowhee.
On both the men’s and women’s sides, the Gators’ 1-3 scorers turned in tight pack spreads, with the women at one second, the men just under five seconds for the top three finishers.
The Gators will now look forward to racing at home Sept. 15 when UF hosts the 24th Annual Mountain Dew Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course on the University of Florida campus. Collegiate races begin at 7:55 a.m.
