The No. 18 University of Florida volleyball team plays host to the Slovenian Junior National Team in a special Labor Day exhibition match Monday. First serve is set for 4 p.m. ET on September 3 at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center and admission is free for all fans. Live stats will be available and the match can be heard live on GatorZone.com with Cory Stephens and former All-SEC setter Missy Whittemore on the call.
The Slovenian Junior National Team is just beginning their quick route throughout the Southeast, having competed at the College of Charleston Tournament this weekend. Slovenia played three matches on the weekend, winning a five-set battle against UNF (20-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-17, 15-8) while getting swept by Memphis (25-21, 25-16, 27-25) and host College of Charleston (25-20, 25-15, 25-12).
Florida is coming off the third annual Nike Big Four Classic, where the Gators dropped matches to No. 2 Texas (3-0: 27-29, 22-25, 24-26) and No. 9 Stanford (3-1: 25-22, 22-25, 20-25, 16-25) over the weekend. Freshman outside hitter Živa Recek (Kočevje, Slovenia) was named to the Nike Big Four Classic All-Tournament Team after hitting .382 against the Longhorns and Cardinal with 37 kills (5.29/set).
Junior Chloe Mann (Gainesville, Fla.) was not far behind Recek, tallying 29 kills over the two-day tournament. Junior Taylor Brauneis (Crystal Lake, Ill.) directed the offense with 97 assists and added 14 digs to tie for second-most on the weekend. Sophomore Taylor Unroe (Muncie, Ind.) led the Gators' back row with 28 digs (4.00/set) and three aces to go along with a perfect serve-receive percentage for the fourth and fifth straight match. Unroe has accomplished the feat 17 times in her career.
After the friendly between the Gators and Slovenia, Florida will prepare to host their final pre-conference tournament of the season in the Active Ankle Challenge. The Gators welcome Georgia Tech, Jacksonville and Louisiana to the O'Dome September 7-8. Florida is in the middle of a six-match stretch in eight days, having played two matches this past weekend.
