TALLAHASSEE, Fla.

No. 22 Florida lost 1-0 at No. 1 Florida State Friday.

The University of Florida soccer team (1-2-1, 0-0 SEC) dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision at No. 1 Florida State (3-0, 0-0 ACC) in front of the Seminoles’ second-largest crowd ever of 2,243 Friday at the Florida State Soccer Complex

A header off a long throw-in scored the Seminoles’ goal in the 10th minute. Jessica Price threw the ball to the corner of the six-yard box where Kristin Grubka flicked the ball back to the far post to score her first goal of the season.

An equalizer looked like it was scored early in second half when sophomore Havana Solaun hit after the feed down the middle of the box from senior All-American Erika Tymrak, but an offsides call waved off the goal. The two tried to combine again in the 71st minute, but Seminole goalkeeper Kelsey Wys made the stop.

“The offsides was very close,” UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. “For the other ones, we need to have a bit more composure. We had awesome chances. Ultimately, that final execution was the difference in the game.”

In the 66th minute, Tiffany McCarty intercepted a pass on the Gator backline, but the shot she took from inside the box was deflected out for a corner kick by Gator goalkeeper Taylor Burke. On the corner, Carson Pickett sent a curling ball that was headed to the far post upper corner, but Burke got an outstretched hand on it to keep it out of the goal

Burleigh thought Burke handled the issues presented by the Seminoles, including their long throw-in, well Friday.

“I thought she did a great job handling their long throw-in,” Burleigh said. “She had that one great one-on-one save that was the difference in keeping us in the game.”

For the match, Burke recorded four saves and Wys posted five.

The Gators had a great look in the final three minute. Senior Holly King won the ball just inside the middle of the field and sent it forward to Tymrak. She played a ball from the top of the box to Solaun, who was making a run through the left side but her shot was high.

Although disappointed with the final result, Burleigh liked what she saw from the Gators Friday.

“I thought we really played well. I loved the way we played, especially the second part of the first half and all of the second half,” Burleigh said. “I loved the way we played.”

Tonight finished a three-match road-stretch top-15 teams for Florida, as last weekend the Gators tied then No. 14 North Carolina 0-0 20T and defeated then No. 2 Duke 3-2 OT. Now the Gators return home to play host to Florida International (2-1, 0-0 SBC) on Sunday, Sept. 2. FIU lost 1-0 at Florida Gulf Coast Friday evening. Sunday’s start time is at 7 p.m. at the James G. Pressly Stadium and admission is free. It is “Gators Go Green Night” and the first 500 fans receive recycle totes. Plan to attend the post-match autograph session to have all the Gators sign a 2012 team poster just for you.

Live streaming video of Sunday’s match is available via GatorVision. The match can also be heard on ESPN 850/900, by simulcast on Cox Channel 946 (Gainesville/Ocala) or on www.GatorZone.com with Adam Schick and Matthew Stubbington calling the action.
