A pair of Gator letterwinners captured Olympic medals on the last day any are scheduled to compete at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Novlene Williams-Mills (Jamaica) and Jeff Demps (U.S.A.) took home hardware as members of their respective country’s relay squads at Olympic Stadium.
Gator letterwinners combined to earn 18 Olympic medals, the second-most ever by a Gator contingent during a single Olympiad, just shy of the all-time mark set by the 24 Gators who compiled 20 medals competing at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, winning 13 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze all in the sport of swimming.
In London, a Gator-record 35 letterwinners combined to win six gold medals, six silver and six bronze in the sports of soccer, swimming, track & field and tennis.
Track & Field
Novlene Williams-Mills (Jamaica) anchored the Jamaican women’s 4x400-meter relay on Saturday, earning a bronze medal with their season’s-best time of 3:20.95. This is Williams-Mills’ second medal, as she won gold with the Jamaican women’s 4x400-meter relay in 2004.
The U.S. men’s 4x100-meter relay earned a silver medal with a new American record of 37.04, tying the previous world record. Jeff Demps (U.S.A.), who ran in the preliminaries of the event but was not selected to the final, will receive a silver medal as well.
Demps torched the track as a part of the Team USA quartet during the first round that ran for the previous American record of 37.38.
